Mars and Neptune are two of the most interesting planets in our Solar System. Both are gas giants and have similarities in size and composition, yet there are several key differences between them.

Size and Distance from the Sun
Mars is much smaller than Neptune, measuring only 6,792 km across its equator compared to Neptune’s 49,528 km. This difference in size is also reflected in Mars’ distance from the Sun; it is 1.52 AU away while Neptune is 30 AU away.
An astronomical unit (AU) measures a large distance—approximately 93 million miles—and is used to measure distances between celestial objects like stars and planets.
Composition
The gas giant planets are composed mostly of hydrogen and helium with traces of methane and ammonia. However, despite their similar makeup, there are still major differences between Mars and Neptune’s atmospheres.
The atmosphere on Neptune consists of about 80% hydrogen, 19% helium, and 1% other gases like methane which gives it its characteristic blue color due to the absorption of red light by methane molecules in its upper atmosphere.
On Mars, however, the atmosphere contains 95% carbon dioxide with small amounts of nitrogen and argon mixed in.
Temperature
Another difference between these two gas giants is temperature; on average temperatures on Neptune range from -218°C (-360°F) to -214°C (-353°F).
In comparison, temperatures on Mars range from -87°C (-125°F) to 27°C (81°F). This temperature difference makes sense when you take into account that they are almost 29 AU apart!
